#News #Dubai - One of the world's tallest residential tower on
fire Saturday morning in the Marina district of Dubai, Visible light
yellow flame, but there were no reports of casualties, civil defense
officials said.
The fire broke out around 02:00 on the 86th floor of the Torch tower at
the northeast end densely populated district, which is dogged by high
rise skyscrapers. Scattered debris from the fire, the nearby streets
after the fire appeared to be extinguished. Strong winds whipped through
the area.
The civil defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said
there were no reports of deaths or injuries.
The cause of the fire was not yet clear.
The Marina location dozens of towering apartment blocks and hotels, many
of them were built during the last decade. The apartments are popular
with a large number of professional expatriates Dubai.
Police blocked the area around the Torch, which still has the
power. The lights were on in many apartments in and a few fire trucks
and police vehicles were at the scene.
Residents of at least one neighboring tower were told to evacuate as a
precaution due to high winds, but they were later allowed back inside.
Two residents Torch said they were told the fire started on the 52nd
floor. Flaming material falling from the initial fire and then set the
lower part of the building on fire, they said.
One resident, Steve Short, 53, from Liverpool, England, praised the work
of firefighters who arrived quickly.
He said the fire alarm
alerted residents to the fire and building management sent workers
knocking on the door to ensure residents get out.
Resident R.J. Morlock, 33, of Houston, was shot in the phone video that
shows a bright yellow flame reached what appeared to be several stories
in two separate parts of the building. He said residents were nervous
out but fire crews were able to bring the situation under control.
"I'm really surprised they got it under control pretty quickly," he
said. "It looks like it will go up."
Torch was opened in 2011 and is one of the tallest residential tower in
the world, according to the developer Select Group.
